I have just read Doris's letter.....and Oh what memories that brought back ........... Miss Percy riding down Parrin Lane to school looking like 'Bullwinkle' on her pop pop motor bike ........... Miss Hawkins, taking 'optional', the drama group, I was 'Titania!' in 'Midsummer Nights Dream,' put me off Shakespeare for the rest of my life!
Miss Hawkins would race down that hall and I can hear her crepe soled shoes now squeaking along the parquet floor yelling at me that "You......are the most Lancashire girl I have in this school!" (and after all these years in the States I still have a strong Lancashire accent.)
Some of us are still bearing the scars from Miss Westbrook's board duster! Miss Wood, " stop squeaking those chairs," and she couldn't stand the feel of cotton wool. Poor Miss Owen she did take some teasing. Miss Hannah had just become Mrs Bruce as I arrived, anyone remember Mrs Chapman? History and P.E.
I loved Miss Healy I think she was everyone's favorite. Then there was Mrs Benson, Geography. Miss Williams was a terror she once cost me 3 housepoints because she saw me walking home from school and I was eating an apple. Eating on the streets.!!!......a sin.
When I went to the school it was called "Winton Senior School", (when it opened)
I left in July 1946 and was one of the last 14 year olds to leave. The school leaving year went up after that.........hang on to those memories.............
